Recognising the Signs of GI Stasis and Providing Home Care

As herbivores, guinea pigs have a digestive system designed to function continuously. In the wild, they keep their gut moving by constantly eating high-fibre forage. For guinea pig owners, the most dangerous sign is when the pet stops eating. This is not merely poor appetite. It is often the precursor to potentially fatal gastrointestinal stasis, or GI stasis. In Hong Kong exotic pet cases, GI stasis is one of the most common causes of death in guinea pigs.

Why is a guinea pig that is “not eating” considered a medical emergency?
The guinea pig gut relies on beneficial bacteria to break down fibre. Once food intake stops for more than 12 to 24 hours, gut motility slows dramatically or may stop completely. This leads to gas accumulation in the intestines, bacterial imbalance, and toxin production. Even more seriously, not eating can trigger fatty liver, a complication that can lead to organ failure in a short time. For this reason, a guinea pig that is not eating requires immediate intervention.

The physiology of GI stasis: From slowed motility to toxaemia
When gut movement slows, intestinal contents become dry and obstructed. This creates a vicious cycle: pain leads to poorer appetite, and poor appetite causes even slower motility. The accumulated food begins to ferment and produces large amounts of gas, causing severe pain. Without medical intervention, the guinea pig may go into shock from dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and self-generated toxaemia.

Recognising early warning signs: Details owners should watch for
Guinea pigs are very good at hiding pain, so close observation is essential:

Abnormal droppings: This is the most accurate indicator. The number of droppings may suddenly decrease, they may become smaller, dry and pointed, or there may be no droppings at all.

Posture changes: A guinea pig with abdominal pain may develop a hunched posture or keep shifting position without being able to rest comfortably.

Lethargy: Losing interest in favourite vegetables or treats and hiding motionless in a corner.

Teeth grinding: Frequent and loud teeth grinding usually indicates severe pain.

Core factors that trigger GI stasis

Insufficient fibre intake: This is the most common cause. A guinea pig’s diet should consist of about 80% hay. If pellets or vegetables are over-relied upon, the intestines lack the rough fibre needed to stimulate motility, and gut movement slows.

Dental problems: If overgrown molars cause chewing pain, the guinea pig will reduce food intake on its own, which can then trigger stasis.

Environmental stress: Sudden noise, changes in the environment, or the loss of a companion can all trigger a stress response that affects digestion.

Clinical diagnosis and treatment procedures
When a guinea pig is brought in because it is not eating, the veterinarian will generally perform the following steps:

Abdominal palpation and auscultation: Assess whether gut sounds are reduced or absent, and whether gas has accumulated.

Imaging (X-ray): Distinguish simple stasis from a physical intestinal obstruction. If it is the latter, force-feeding may cause gastric rupture.

Fluid therapy and prokinetic medication: Subcutaneous fluids are used to correct dehydration, together with medications that stimulate gut motility and provide pain relief.

Home care steps during the golden rescue window
Late at night, when immediate veterinary care is not available, owners can carry out the following emergency measures:

Prevention is better than treatment
The keys to maintaining digestive health are unlimited hay and regular exercise.
