FIP stands for feline infectious peritonitis and is related to feline coronavirus, but not every cat infected with feline coronavirus will develop FIP. This is one of the reasons why FIP is so easily misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many cats may have been exposed to the related virus, but only a proportion of them actually develop FIP. Therefore, diagnosing FIP should not be understood simply as ‘a positive coronavirus result means FIP’. It requires an overall assessment of clinical signs, test results and disease progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today’s veterinary field, FIP is no longer regarded as a disease with no hope at all. Treatment options such as GS-441524 and molnupiravir also allow some cases to pursue stabilization or even recovery through proper assessment and appropriate treatment. However, this does not mean all cases can be managed in the same way. Owners should not buy medications on their own or ask non-veterinary personnel to inject them. Information circulating online should not be treated as a treatment plan suitable for a specific cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n GS-441524, molnupiravir and new treatment directions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n GS-441524 is one of the drugs closely associated with FIP treatment in recent years. As clinical experience has increased, FIP treatment protocols and monitoring methods have gradually become more established. GS-441524 has now entered the formal veterinary prescription system in Hong Kong. In recent years, another antiviral drug, molnupiravir, has also been viewed as one of the newer options for FIP treatment. Clinical information suggests that, in suitable cases, with appropriate dosing and complete monitoring, the treatment effect of molnupiravir can be close to that of GS-441524. The significance of a veterinary clinic providing GS-441524 or molnupiravir is not ‘selling medication’, but precision medicine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n When GS-441524 or molnupiravir is obtained through a formal clinic and combined with veterinary diagnosis, dose adjustment, treatment monitoring and supportive care, some FIP cases can achieve a good treatment response. Owners should allow a registered veterinarian to determine the FIP treatment plan according to the actual case, rather than deciding only by drug name or price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why is it not recommended to buy medication through unofficial channels yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is an area that many owners most easily misunderstand and that requires particular caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the past, because treatment options were limited, some owners looked for GS-441524, molnupiravir or other antiviral drugs through unofficial channels, or even had non-veterinary personnel assist with injections or dose instructions. If other possibilities are not ruled out first and unofficial treatment is started directly, the opportunity for a more appropriate management direction may be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How should Hong Kong cat owners approach a suspected FIP case?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If a cat shows persistent fever, weight loss, poor energy, abdominal enlargement, labored breathing, eye inflammation, abnormal gait or neurological signs, a veterinary assessment should be arranged as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When facing FIP, the most important thing for owners is not to piece together a medication list online, but to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n FIP today is indeed different from the past. Treatment options such as GS-441524 and molnupiravir make clinical management more hopeful and may also reduce the treatment burden for some owners. However, the key factors that truly improve prognosis remain proper medical assessment, appropriate drug selection and complete treatment monitoring, not self-management. If FIP is suspected, professional veterinary assessment and treatment should be arranged as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FAQ<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Does FIP still mean a terminal disease?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It should no longer be understood from this perspective. Some FIP cases may improve significantly or even recover with appropriate assessment and antiviral treatment. In addition to GS-441524, molnupiravir is also one of the treatment options that veterinarians may assess in recent years. Some clinical information suggests that suitable cases monitored by a veterinarian may have a treatment response close to GS-441524, while the cost is also generally lower.
